When looking for a new mobile CD Deck, I had a few requirements in mind that it would have to meet. I wanted an auxiliary input right on the front, MP3 playback, a rotary encoder (volume dial), and a flip down face. The JVC KDG420 met all of those requirements. It navigates MP3 CD with ease, and the aux input works great.
Unfortunately, the rotary dial is a little hard to turn sometimes without accidentally muting the sound. I had to get used to it so I could make sure not to turn it in such a way (now it's not such a problem). Also, the flip down face works fine, but it doesn't really grant you any of the advantages that should come from that. There's still a lot of wasted space above the display.
My other complaints are for characteristics I could/should have detected before buying, but I'll write about it here in-case it could help anyone else.
The display, like all other displays with a blue background and white text, is very annoying at night. Instead of small letters and numbers glowing in the dark, the entire display glows, and it can be quite distracting. JVC makes the KD-G510 which costs just a little bit more (and otherwise looks the same with the same features plus a remote) but has a much better display screen. In retrospect I would have spent more for that.
Also, the buttons aren't placed or shaped very well. Other CD decks have buttons positioned and shaped so it's easy to find the button you want without looking at it. But this JVC uses lots of same-sized, straight-edged buttons placed close together. This makes the cd-player look a lot nicer, classier, and more professional than a lot of others, but it's a little harder to use while driving.
Overall, a great cd-deck (if these are the features you're looking for) considering the price. I'm happy with mine.
